I've been feeling kinda bummed lately due to slow Etsy sales so I thought a giveaway would be just the thing to perk me up. Not only do I love selling vintage I also enjoy giving it away to friends. Now I know we're only virtual friends but that still makes you eligible to receive fun gifts. No strings or hoops to jump through... just a comment saying you want to enter. The contest will start now and end on Wednesday, July 20th. The winner will be chosen by random.org and will receive both items pictured below. I apologize to my International friends but this giveaway is for US residents only. Don't worry I promise to have another giveaway with you included. This giveaway is being paid for by me and is not sponsored by any company. Good luck! :)

The prizes...

1980's floral party dress I didn’t always like yard sales and thrift shops. Gasp! It’s shocking, I know. My aunt would drag me to every yard, garage, porch and/or junk sale from here to the county line if it meant she was going to find a treasure. As a teenager I was mortified. I cannot even begin to explain the sheer horror I felt when we would pull into the driveway of a classmate. “OMG! Just kill me now. My life is over anyway.” That was until I discovered vintage clothing. The day I found a treasure trove of 1970’s bell bottoms and embroidered blouses was when I finally realized how silly I had been. From that moment on I was hooked. I went from slinking down in the seat to hanging my head out the window screaming “Go back! You missed the turn!” I was the first one out of the car and the last one back in. I had no fear and would shamelessly ask the homeowners if they still had any of their old clothes from when they were my age. Some did, some didn’t and the ones who did LOVED that I had such an interest in them. I have had more than one OH (that’s Original Hippie) tell me how happy it made them to pass their belongings on to a new generation. And now that I have reached the point of no longer being trusted by anyone under 30 (kudos to those of you who understand that) I can see why they were so excited.

2.) My very first dream as a child was to be a singer in a band. I’m pretty sure I spent the majority of my childhood in front of a mirror, hair brush in hand and singing at the top of my lungs. It wasn’t until I had a sing off with my then best friend (and future Opera singer) that I realized I had no talent. It crushed me. I mean really crushed me. I even gave up on dreams until several years later when I received a set of hand me down Fashion Plates. After that I was hell bent on becoming a designer. Unfortunately that dream was never realized either. I have since moved on to drummer, or possibly the Aflac duck.

3.) Speaking of childhood… I was a tomboy through and through. I refused to wear shoes, played in the dirt, collected bugs and was always covered in sweat. I’m actually surprised I still have skin left on my knees and elbows considering my aunt used Ajax to clean the dirt off. That is not an exaggeration. My aunt has literally scrubbed my knees and elbows with household cleaners. I can’t make this stuff up.

4.) I am currently growing out a pixie cut… and it’s not pretty. I should also mention that I have naturally curly hair(aka: the bane of my existence). I also just started the Curly Girl method. I’m two days in and can already tell a difference. My hair feels softer and the curls are more defined. For those of you who may be interested I highly suggest the Curly Girl Handbook by Lorraine Massey. You can also find a wealth of information at the sites listed below.

http://www.naturallycurly.com/

http://dormroomcurly.blogspot.com/

5.) Before opening my Etsy shop I was the proud owner of a brick & mortar store. I sometimes miss it but then I remember the expenses, being screwed over by a wholesale company and the fact that East Tennessee is NOT the best place to open a vintage shop. I should have invested in Wal-Mart, fast food or possibly built my own church.

6.) I was once accused of attempting to poison my local utilities company with Anthrax. Again, I can’t make this stuff up. It was several years ago when the Anthrax scare was running rampant and everybody in my home town thought we were going to be the next target. Well, everybody except me and the other three people who had half a brain. To make a very long story short, I had this HUGE chalk bank that I kept spare change in. It was great because it could literally hold several hundred dollars in change but the downside was the residue it left allover the coins. I had used some of those coins when paying my utilities bill and because there was a “white powder” on them the teller freaked out. She even complained of a headache, left work early and made a trip to the ER. Complete drama queen just trying to get attention. Anyway, it was a humorous and eye opening experience. It was also the day I realized I wanted to be as far away from that town as I could possibly get.

7.) And last but not least, a bunch of randomness… I used to iron my money. When I had sleepovers I made my friends change their socks before getting in my bed. I have scar on my forehead from a car wreck when I was two years old. I prefer salty over sweet snacks. I require advance cleaning notice before company comes over. A photo of me with Josh Homme was published in Blender magazine. I am hopelessly addicted to "Tales of Mere Existence" by Lev Yilmaz. I love 80s horror. My great grandmother was French. And I still want to be a singer. :)

Seven most recently discovered blogs…

s.s. vintage

here’s looking at me kid

the littlest poly

tea & chickadees

violet bella’s world

school of vintage

mint demode

TALK of the Town

I have had a slew of convos and inquiries about the Try A Little Kindness wall hanging in this listing so when Kellie of Wear It Out Vintage contacted me about hers I just had to find out how many of these gems were out there. The time really flies by when you're neglecting your blog, huh? As you may have noticed I've deleted almost all of my old posts. While perusing through said posts I realized just how far off my original course I had roamed. My initial plan when starting this little space was to show off my latest thrift store finds, promote my Etsy shop and connect with other vintage loving gals. So starting today I am getting this vintage train back on track and what better way to do it than with my first ever Thrifty Finds post. It's not much but it's a start. Enjoy!

This week has been extremely slow in the thrifting department as most of my favorite shops are closed due to snow. However, last week turned up some pretty great finds... including my new arc floor lamp. I scored this beauty for just $14! The chrome lamps are more desirable than the gold ones but I think the shape and finish match perfectly with my Curtis Jere. Another thrifty purchase... and for only $10!

I actually found this piece a few weeks ago but have yet to hang it. We're waiting on a carpenter friend of ours to help so we don't damage the walls. You would be shocked at how easily our apartment walls mar. I'm convinced they're made of paper mache and chicken wire. As for the rest of my vintage finds... I scored a great no smoking sign, covered Pyrex casserole dish and miscellaneous clothing items. Some of which will be listed in my shop soon. ;)

What Would Norma Watson Wear?

It's no secret around my house that I *love* horror films. It is a guarantee that if you ever see me in a video store I will either be in the horror section or raiding the candy shelf. Several years ago I had the pleasure of working in a video store (hands down the best job EVER) and whenever I could get away with it I would have some blood drenched eyeballs popping out gut splattering flick playing on the in store TV. Lucky for me the store I worked at had a great selection of 70s and 80s horror so I had a lot of fun stuff to choose from. One of my favorites back then (and still is!) was Carrie.

Carrie wasn't the goriest of films by any means, but it certainly was disturbing. I won't go into details about the film because I'm pretty sure we've all seen or at least heard about it. What I will tell you about is my favorite character... Miss Norma Watson.

I loved Norma from the very first time she opened her bitchy little mouth. She may have been cruel and heartless just like her friends, but Norma had her a style all her own. While the other girls were wearing gauzy tops and chevron skirts, Norma was decked out in denim overalls. She wore chunky boots in a sea of espadrilles and red hot gym shorts while the other girls were basic in black. She had perfectly messy pigtails with jangly hair ties, an array of rainbow pins and a flowy prom dress topped off with her signature red cap. So my dear blogging friends this post is for Norma and all her individual glory. The next time you are having trouble finding your own style just ask yourself.... What Would Norma Watson Wear?

All images were found via Google images except for the vintage prom dress.
